Artist statement: While Everything Falls Away

There are moments when, upon entering a particular place or space, we suddenly forget what we were just about to do. Our attention is drawn instead to the light and shadow, scents, colors, or sounds that surround us.

While Everything Falls Away reflects my experience of being in a space and suddenly losing track of what I was about to do, or even of what I had been thinking. In that instant, everything else seems to fall away. What remains in my awareness is the movement of scents through the space and the shifting interplay of light. At the same time, I become aware that I am, in a sense, letting go of myself.

Through painting, I attempt to express this experience and the sense of ambiguity between the real and the intangible that emerges within a particular moment in time and space. By working with acrylic paints whose material qualities allow them to move with the air, I create delicate, translucent layers of color through which light can pass.As the physical space formed by the painting overlaps with the colors and shadows created by light, layer upon layer, a dialogue between space, light, and time begins to unfold.
