Mind Set Art Center is pleased to present While Everything Falls Away, its first collaboration with Huang Kuan Chun, on view from August 29 through October 8, 2026. The exhibition continues Huang’s exploration into the materiality of painting, spatial experience, and embodied perception. Through his distinctive concept of the “painting-body,” he reconsiders the relationships among color, light, and support.
The exhibition takes as its point of departure those subtle moments of suspension in everyday consciousness—moments when a passing shift of light, a scent, or a color arrests our attention and briefly releases us from habitual patterns of thought. As external distractions recede, perception becomes momentarily untethered from the logic and purpose of everyday life, entering a more neutral register in which the body returns to an immediate awareness of its surroundings.
Huang’s interest in this neutral mode of perception—and in the elemental condition of matter—draws on his background in sculpture and textile dyeing. Through an experimental process, he repeatedly layers and dries acrylic paint on glass before peeling away the resulting film intact. Released from its original support, paint becomes a material presence capable of occupying space on its own: what Huang calls a “painting-body.”
Inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s notion of the inframince, or “infrathin,” Huang explores the perceptual differences that emerge at the threshold of extreme material thinness. His translucent membranes of paint admit light, allowing color to shift according to the viewer’s position, the surrounding environment, and changing conditions of illumination. As viewers move through the space, they encounter shifting moments in which color, shadow, and space overlap.
In this exhibition, Huang extends this inquiry into the architectural space of the gallery. Sky is applied directly to a gallery window, where daylight passes through the paint membrane and continuously transforms the work over the course of the day. Painting is no longer a sealed or fixed image; instead, it becomes a spatial event shaped through its interaction with architecture, light, and time.
Concurrently, Mind Set Art Center presents works by Portuguese artist Rui Miguel Leitão Ferreira, creating a dialogue between the two artists’ distinct approaches to medium and material within the expanded field of contemporary painting. Ferreira layers and assembles used canvas, stretcher bars, and dense applications of acrylic paint, transforming painting into an object that bears the traces of time. Huang, by contrast, accumulates layers of paint only to remove their support, allowing color to enter space as an autonomous material presence. While Ferreira evokes time through material accumulation, Huang turns, through processes of peeling away and thinning, toward light and embodied perception. Together, their practices loosen the conventional boundary between painting and object, revealing painting as something at once material, spatial, and contingent.
In While Everything Falls Away, painting is not simply something to be looked at, but a perceptual field generated through light, time, and the viewer’s body. Huang invites viewers to suspend familiar habits of looking and, within fleeting moments that resist easy naming, encounter color and space in their most immediate forms.
