Boundless Life by Chung Shun-Wen

8 September - 13 October 2018

Chung Shun-Wen obtains endless nutrient from her beloved homeland to create exquisite and graceful Eastern gouache paintings. Living in the house that generations of her family have lived in under the Bamboo Hat Hill in Meinong, Chung appreciates moments of life and the changes of seasons. She observes the bearings of creatures surrounding her, cherishes sincere feelings exchanged amongst people, plants and animals, and tells the richness and delight of life through her artistic practice.

Grew up in a literary family, Chung did not follow the footsteps of her grandfather and father to become a writer, yet she has inherited their attitude of observing and recording life, and expresses the beauty she comprehends via painting. Thus, the smell of moist earth in the spring, the moving clouds in the summer afternoon, and the refreshing mist after convection rains all become the hidden charms of her work. “Boundless Life” is a collection of her feelings during an artist residency in Chishang last summer, the strolls taken in Baden-Baden in southwestern Germany, and everyday life around her Mother’s plants and her little companions under the Bamboo Hat Hill in Meinong. With tender brushwork and delicate shades, Chung depicts clusters of flowers and flower-like spring leaves of bougainvillea, birds and cats wandering in the nature, and objects collected during her travels, telling those “that-has-been” of her peaceful and content years.
