Figurative Illusion - A Solo Exhibition by Jhong Jiang-Ze

10 September - 8 October 2016

Mind Set Art Center is pleased to present Jhong Jiang-Ze’s latest solo exhibition, “Figurative Illusion” from 10 September to 8 October 2016.

Jhong Jiang-Ze has always been interested in body, space and the state of mind. The human condition both in physical and psychological terms is the major subject matter of the exhibition “Figurative Illusion”. Of the recent works, Air Raid and Line of Defense were inspired by British documentary photos. The artist captured the unusual atmosphere depicting people's situation of trying carrying on everyday life calmly under the threat of war without knowing what would happen the next minute. The surrounding environments in the paintings are fragmented and displaced, echoing the unpredictable future and unseen fear.

On the other hand, more poetic works are also shown in this exhibition, such as Girl Lifting Skirt and Horsemanship. Ingenious composition was applied to create a mysterious air in Girl Lifting Skirt. Here, the head of the blond girl is left out of the canvas, and all can be seen is her gesture of lifting her skirt in a wide field background. The branches beside her twist forwards through the right arm, echoing her peculiar state of mind. The pieces on display in “Figurative Illusion” are linked by sometimes faintly discernible clues. With his unrestrained rendering, the figures seem to become unintelligible, and the space is distorted, overlapped to escape from the linear time, opening up a dialogue concerning visual illusion, remodeling of meanings, and space transformation.

Jhong Jiang-Ze was born 1981 in Taipei, where he currently works and lives. Jhong Jiang-Ze has always attempted to challenge the contemporary world with different viewpoints. Through his work, various aspects of the human nature are probed and reinterpreted, revealing limitless possibilities of the way we perceive and react to the world. With powerful and unpredictable brush strokes, Jhong transforms the contemplation provoked by the dispersion of various images or ideas into mystic paintings. Here, the time is no longer linear and spaces overlap, and a unique inner structure is thus created by the artist. Jhong’s work is collected by institutions including National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan, Art Bank, Taiwan, and Long Yen Foundation, Taiwan.
