It is with great pleasure that Mind Set Art Center is launching “Journey Through the Mind” in early autumn. It is artist LIN Wei-Hsiang’s third solo-exhibition at the gallery, and consists of 20 of his latest paintings completed in the last three years. The show is scheduled to run from September 1 through October 7, 2023. You are cordially invited to the opening reception, held on Saturday, September 2, at 3:00 p.m.

LIN Wei-Hsiang has long been fascinated with beauty of nature. He has dedicated his career to painting mountains, forests, clouds and mist. By repeatedly adding layers of desaturated oil color on his canvas, LIN has managed to create a visual world through which the artist and the viewers can freely traverse and express their sentiments. With dynamic brushstrokes and fluid Lines, he has imbued his paintings with an energy akin to the rhythm of breathing. To LIN, the forest and the mountains are where his heart and soul belongs. It is also a source of infinite inspiration and nostalgia in his ongoing artistic pursuit. His decades of observing the endless mountains in nature has transformed his journey into the inner landscape in his mind. The external journey and the internal reflection have intertwined with each, breathing new life into his work.

The exhibition’s titular painting, “Journey Through the Mind”, is a large-scale landscape work that took the artists several years to complete. Endless mountains shrouded in clouds and mist dominate the colossal canvas that stretches almost 10-meter wide. Varying light and shadows scatter across the scene, punctuating the vast spectacle of intersecting time and space. The horizontal nature of the painting leads the viewers’ eyes into the obscure landscape, immersing them in the dancing Lines and shapes that comes together to form an aesthetics that merges the spirit of eastern ink brush with western abstract painting. On the other hand, the much smaller “Hillcrest” doesn’t evoke the same sense of abstraction and sensorial impact, but instead displays the sketching of a small hillcrest rooted in the artist’s memories and imagination. The hill, the passing breeze and the flowing energy come together to perform a visual sonata.

About LIN Wei-Hsiang

Born in 1983, LIN Wei-Hsiang obtained his MFA from the Graduate Institute of Fine Arts and Crafts Education of National Hsinchu University of Educations. Lin has long felt a deep connection with nature, and he often goes on long walks in the mountains for inspiration. At a time when most of his peers look to create with novel mediums and subject matters, Lin maintains his traditional approach and makes a large number of sketches on the endless woods, mountain and mist in Taiwan. His portrayal of landscapes allows him to explore the philosophical connection between himself, his vision and his spirit. By reinterpreting of natural landscape with his paintbrush, Lin expresses his proximity and genuine conversations with nature. His artworks have been included in the collections of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan Art Bank, National Chiao Tung University Arts Center, and E. Sun Bank.
