Nona GARCIA Philippines, b. 1978

Nona Garcia (b.1978, Manila; lives and works in Baguio City, Benguet Province, Philippines) investigates how images reveal and withhold, setting up dialogues between the transparent and the concealed, the framed and the natural, the sublime and the everyday. Since relocating to mountainous Baguio in 2013, she has responded to the immediacy of this landscape through large-scale, meticulously rendered paintings of scenes in and around her home. A parallel body of work employs X-ray imaging to picture Cordilleran and other indigenous artifacts, reliquaries of saints, and delicate animal bones arranged in mandala-like constellations. These become lightbox installations and window pieces in which exposure results in greater mystery; bathed in luminous blue, each flaw becomes legible and the objects take on an unexpected afterlife. Her work has been widely exhibited in the Philippines and internationally.
