Born in 1969, CHEN Yin Ling received her MFA in Fine Art from the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, in 2008. Her practice primarily employs video and the cutting and weaving of found objects as media.
The human figure has always been at the core of Chen Yen-Ling’s artistic focus. Like using a close-up lens, she carefully examines details from the emotions conveyed in facial expressions to the postures of the body. Through this gazing, Chen practices engaging in dialogue with herself while also seeking to understand the ties between people and their families, and ultimately with the world. By combining discarded wood with everyday objects accumulated over many years—such as clothing, daily necessities, books — and through extensive hand stitching and wood cutting, she allows diIerent materials to collide and come together. In this way, she interprets intimate relationships and life in the present, seeking anew, through human emotions and predicaments, possible places from which to move forward.
Chen’s early works focused primarily on video. Her works were presented at the Toronto Women’s Film Festival in Canada, the San Francisco International Film and Video Festival in the United States, the Norwich Aurora Arts Festival in the United Kingdom, the Stalowa Wola Museum in Poland, and in various countries across Europe. In recent years, her mixed media installations have also been exhibited at the Taoyuan Children’s Art Center , TKG+, and Treasure Hill Artist Village.
