TSENG Chien-Ying was born in Nantou, Taiwan, in 1987. He received his MFA from the Department of Fine Arts at Taipei National University of the Arts in 2013, and currently lives and works in Taipei.
Working primarily with ink, glue-color painting, other Eastern painting media, and ceramic sculpture, Tseng brings traditional classical materials into dialogue with contemporary artistic forms. Through the sensory dimensions of the body, his practice explores conflict and spirituality within contemporary society.
Tseng was selected for the Ministry of Culture’s MIT Young Artist Discovery section in 2015, and was a grantee of the Asian Cultural Council in 2017. In 2020, he was nominated in the Best Album Design category at the 31st Golden Melody Awards. His major exhibitions include Subzoology: Taiwan Biennial (2020), Photosynthesis II (2019), and Entangled and Overlapped Memories: Post-Martial Law Taiwanese Ink Art (2016), among others.
